The History of Sex in America, Part 1

“Spotlight on sexual harassment moves victims to break silence”

“Women Drawing the Line”

“The Evolving Concept of Sexual Harassment”

Thousands and thousands of headlines like these appeared in newspapers across the country — back in 1991. Spare us the self-righteousness, millennials.

Just as every new generation thinks it discovered sex, refusing to wonder how they came kicking and screaming into the world, apparently the new thing is for every generation to think it discovered sexual harassment.

Historical note for my younger readers: George Washington didn’t grab women’s breasts or force them to watch him masturbate.

There have been tectonic shifts in Americans’ attitudes about sex, but the idea of thanking someone by sending him a prostitute with a note in her vagina is of relatively recent vintage. (Hat tip: Hollywood’s Robert Evans!) (For Larry David fans, Evans’ birth name was Robert Shapera.)

These are the major epochs in American sexual history:

1607-1968: Women in America were treated better than any place else on Earth, at any time in history.

1968-1991: Manson Family values swept the nation, with the rise of the Worst Generation. Left-wing men, from senators to hippies, treated women as subjugated beings and sexual playthings.

The Weathermen forced girls into group sex. The Supreme Court granted constitutional protection to the most vile forms of pornography. Hollywood dumped the Hays Code, and promptly went pedal-to-the-metal on movies showing the bright side of the sexual exploitation of women.

Sen. Teddy Kennedy let a girl drown at Chappaquiddick, after driving with his lights off to avoid detection on the way to a late-night extramarital liaison, and then didn’t report the accident for hours, passing houses with their lights on, while he tried to construct an alibi, ending with him asking his cousin to say he was driving.

The New York Times’ James Reston’s first sentence on Kennedy’s killing and cover-up was: “Tragedy has again struck the Kennedy family.” Within 11 years Kennedy was running for president to gushing press notices.

1991-the near-present: Sexual degradation of women is still taken utterly unseriously by the left, as sexual harassment is used exclusively as a political weapon against enemies of the state: conservatives, white men, athletes and Haven Monahan, the rakish UVA frat boy who didn’t exist, but was still made infamous by Rolling Stone magazine.

The proof comes from two major events from the 1990s: The false sexual harassment charges against Judge Clarence Thomas in 1991 and the true sexual assault charges against President Bill Clinton in 1998.

The whole country knew Anita Hill was not telling the truth when she claimed Thomas had sexually harassed her at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Perry Mason-style, her charges were produced decades after the alleged dirty talk, but right before the U.S. Senate voted on Thomas’ nomination to the Supreme Court.

Hill didn’t want to go public with her story (for good reason). But she was assured by feminists that she just had to whisper vague allegations to the Senate Judiciary Committee and Thomas would quietly withdraw.

Even the accusations are hard to take seriously in the Age of Weinstein. Hill said Thomas talked about pornography and bragged about his sexual prowess. No touching, no propositioning, no quid pro quo, no grabbing a woman’s breasts and taking a photo.

The media did all they could to support Hill, featuring her defenders on all the Sunday shows, but — and this was the key — Americans saw the hearings.

Poll after poll showed that the public believed Thomas by staggering margins. Not one person who knew both Hill and Thomas believed Hill. Even wacko feminists and eunuch “feminist” males didn’t really believe Hill. As mentioned, they just wanted to block Thomas’ nomination in order to save “choice.”

In the end, 11 Democrats voted to confirm his nomination.

Feminists lost the battle, but won the war by bothering all of us with their sexual harassment training sessions for the next few decades. Men just don’t get it! Women don’t lie! Believe the women! (Some women were NOT to be believed: The ones telling pollsters they believed Thomas over Hill, 2 to 1.)

After years of this sex panic, with men being sued for telling their secretaries “you look great in that,” feminists finally got themselves a genuine sexual predator with President Bill Clinton.

Feminists defended the predator.

  • Great effort to set the records straight !! Thank you very much.

  • Excellent article by Ann. She lays it out perfectly for everyone to see. At 67 years old, I remember the time from the 60’s to today. Everything she wrote was true.

  • Ann left out the pubic hair on the coke can. That was the moment for me. Plus she was wearing “true blue” to suggest a hero who would never lie. I thought, “can anyone really believe this c–p?”

  • I agree with Ann on this one. I didn’t believe and still don’t believe Anita Hill. I’m not cool. I just care about the truth.

  • This is a sidebar but even if Roy Moore chased girls in Alabama what was the legal age of consent?
I seem to remember that some states in the Deep South allowed women to marry at age 12 and that was only 50 years ago.
We may NOW find the idea of wooing a 14 year old to be predatory scumbag behavior, but the background has shifted.
Oh well, it is up to the voters to sort it out.

    • Somewhat tells me oldt age, but do recall it well. Jerry Lee Lewis, at age 23, married his first cousin, who was but 13. Pretty sure that any age over about 10 in Louisiana, at the time, though probably frowned on, was legal for marriage, anyway!

    • Another sidebar – The Muslims in the Middle East were campaigning to get the age of consent for women (?) down to 10 yrs old. How progressive.

    • Alabama age of consent today is 16, I don’t know about 30 years ago

  • Fundamentally, what liberals do NOT “get” is the purpose, definition and benefit of law. Like the lessons of history, if we do not learn from our experiences and our mistakes–to correct our behavior–, there is no point or value, except our selfish sense of personal gratification, to our experiences and mistakes. And, if we refuse to identify wrongs or mistakes based on the validity of law in the context of society, it is only the temporary controversy caused by them which will cause us any pangs of conscience due to the cost of the controversy. Undermining the law is not a wise choice, as a matter of choice. What differentiates human beings from animals is the unique ability to verbalize thought, although most animals vocalize their reaction to inflicted pain. It is arguable, but provable, that many laws are made for the specific purpose of preventing pain. It is rare that a law is transgressed for the purpose of preventing pain. Based on this simple fact, it is easy to draw a line of differentiation between liberal and conservative value systems and to prove that liberalism has caused far more pain with respect to behavior and experience than conservatism, precisely because what needs to be preserved is a respect for and obedience to the laws of God which provide “equal justice” for all. Justice, after all, is, literally, no offense. This is not said out of any sense of self-righteousness, rather from the experience that it is true.

    • For centuries, the laws of God allowed slavery. Equal justice for all human beings is a concept that slowly grew out of the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. There is nothing in the Bible that even MENTIONS trial by jury or the right to confront accusers, nor freedom from double jeopardy. And there is no mention of God in the Constitution, which is the greatest expression of equal justice yet known to human beings. The unintended consequences of runaway leftist ideologies are well known and need to be countered rationally, not by declaring that someone has disobeyed some deity.

  • Ann, me dawlin’ – I need to advise you as I did Judge Jeanine. As any photog, worth his camera, about the Franken pic. I am sure most will tell you that it is obtained in much the same manner as those showing people “seeming” to be holding the sun, moon, or Eiffel Tower in one hand! As they say, it’s all in the “perspective.” Playing some “high school Harry” prank picture does not equate to “actual groping.” Michigan folk do need to question, however, how they ever allowed this whack to become a Senator??

    • I guess you havent seen the pic of him groping Joy Behar or another congressman’s wife when having a picture with him. The congressman’s wife is leaning over trying to get away from him, behar is just laughing like its funny. When is sexual harassment ever funny? I see Behar, the liberal is defending the molester, Franken!

      • Nope, not at all interested. That’s for those MN folk, with the brain freeze, to figger out. Only referring to that pic w/sleeping female. Can’t do a thing about “slugs” not in my state!

    • The pic of Franken’s real. He never denied it. If it was fake – the drive by media would’ve cried foul…

      • It is only technically fake. He just does not have his hands in contact with the woman. The photo, of corse, is real enough.

    • Michigan? Franken stole his 2008 Senate election in MINNESOTA!

    • Because gullible people like comedians?

      • Only the “truly gullible” would think Franken had the TALENT to be a comedian! Just enough to get him elected to the Senate of The United States of America from MN! Sad to see how dumbed down Americans have become.

        • Only the truly gullible people would think Franken is innocent.

          • Do recall having read somewhere, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one”

Ah synapse fires off once in a while, that is from that “Bible of assumptions,” @Romans 3:10

  • I believe Judge Roy Moore and do NOT believe the women. There are just too many things that don’t add up for the women. I hope Alambans put a Conservative in the Senate.

    • The charges levied against more are phony the GOP(McConnell,Ryan, etc) never Trumpers paid the women to lie. Ryan and McConnell both said they believe the women before any evidence was produce. They have no evidence. This is all about revenge because McConnell’s boy lost. The GOP eat their own for personal gain. The dems close ranks and support Franken even though he admitted it.

      • Jerry you are 100% spot on!

  • I try to read anythng she writes. Thx Ann.

  • 1607-1968: Women in America were treated better than any place else on Earth, at any time in history. Great line…

  • Ann is a jewel. She most definitely has a way with words. She uses language that makes a sharp point – if you are on the receiving end of that spear like the left. They are left defenseless on a rational basis. Their only defense is foul language and innuendo. They consistently criticize others for what they are doing or have done.

  • I appreciated this brief synopsis. I can’t help but think of several things that really should be added. Of course, the slave women owned by some were always exploited and I think the lower class of struggling immigrants also suffered their share of abuse in the early days of our nation. I really think the horrific world wars, not to mention our own civil war left many men broken and damaged and alcohol became their hiding place and from that sprang a lot of sexual and spousal abuse and damage to many families. I think Hue Hefner and the “Playboy magazine did so much to damage the baby boomer men. Stirring up their sexual desires before maturity played heavily into the idea that women were indeed just sex objects. I think maybe Barbie dolls may have fooled the baby boomer girls into feeling like that look is what was needed to recieve attention and love from men. There really was a psychological mess being promoted in the 60’s & 70’s. The evil parties Ann mentioned were on the far fringes of that and hardly were admired by main stream America. The infadelities of beloved President JFK and Bill Clinton highlighted the acceptance of extra marital affairs which played along with the whole theme of throwing wives under the bus. (Of course, we know Donald Trump played along with this theme before his marriage to Melania) Pretty simple but true to state that the break down of marriage and families which came directly out of the idea that we have decended from Apes was another big culprit in missing the mark for why God created us. We are male and female for a very beautiful display of real love, (body, soul & spirit) & committment through sickness and health and any other trials that may befall us with the help of God’s Grace. Our love bares physical fruit (our children) to further exemplify the loving care and devotion and wisdom God planned. If you study our last 100-150 years of history, it’s pretty easy to see what the Democrats vs. the Republican platforms have supported. (I go back 150 years to highlight the Democratic Party’s avid support of slavery and the practices of Jim Crow in the South although they managed to support the disadvantaged worker to help redeem their image in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when my parents were whole hearted Democrats) I see what we are talking about is morals vs. no morals. Sadly, the “no morals” has been responsible for so many social ills and harm. Morals come from that inner part of us called our conscience which is connected to our Creator. Darwin confessed at the end of his life that his whole purpose in arguing on behalf of evolution was so that he could live in contrast to the morals preached in the Christian Faith. His last days were spent in repenting.

  • Used to be that if a man stepped over the live,a woman could give him a good slap in the face and defend her own dignity. If a woman defends herself now she has assault charges on her hands. True feminists take care of themselves and don’t allow themselves to become victims especially YEARS after the fact. Thank you women’s movement you have made women perennial victims.
